Yamaha has tasted a fair bit of success in the Indian scooter market owing to its Ray series and the Alpha which comes powered by 113cc single-cylinder, air-cooled engine. Continuing its expansion in the scooter segment, Yamaha India is said to be working on the company’s first 125cc scooter codenamed 04X.
Yamaha Motor India is gearing up to begin production at its second plant in India on the outskirts of Chennai, which according to reports will produce new 125cc scooter for India. Interestingly, images of a disguised Yamaha scooter have emerged online which was spotted around the city of Chennai. Going by the scooter caught in the pictures, it looks a lot like the Yamaha Nozza Grande which is sold in Vietnam.
Earlier, Yamaha’s premium D’elight scooter was also spotted in India. Yamaha has not revealed its future scooter plans, but during a meeting with ZigWheels at the 2014 Auto Expo, company officials explained that the current focus of Yamaha Motor India was on scooters and new models can be expected.
The new 125cc could be based on the Yamaha Nozza Grande and designed to suit the needs of Indian buyers. For instance, internationally the Yamaha Nozza Grande is powered by a fuel-injected motor but to make the scooter cost effective in India it may feature just a carburettor. Expect the 125cc mill to generate around 8PS of peak power and 9.5Nm of torque. The Yamaha 125cc scooter will be pitched against the Honda Activa 125 and the Suzuki Access 125 in our market, and could command a slightly premium price between Rs 55,000 to Rs 60,000.
